Romans 9:6b is very enlightening:
…For they are not all Israel, that are of Israel:
For me, Romans 9:6 could just as easily read …”For they are not all “the church”, that are of “the church””.
Many believe that “the church” has replaced the Israel of God but that is not so and that is not what I mean.
What I do mean, and what I believe the Scriptures reveal to us, is simply that not all who call themselves a part of “the church” actually is.
In the Bible, the word “church” is translated from the Greek word “Ecclesia”. It has a judicial inference to it and it means the “called out ones” or “one who is summoned”. Unfortunately, there are multitudes of entire “churches”, as well as individuals who are part of a “church”, that are not summoned by God to be a part of His “Church”; His Israel.
Are you “lukewarm”?
You may recall that Revelation chapter 3 is a continuation of the treatise of the seven churches of Asia Minor.
To the Laodicean “church”, Yeshua said,
“…because you were neither cold nor hot, I will spue you out of my mouth”.Rev. 3:16
Here is what J. Vernon Mcgee said about being “lukewarm”: “This had a background and a local meaning for the people in that day. Being down in the valley, they had difficulty getting water in Laodicea. The Laodiceans built an aqueduct to bring cold water down from the mountains. When it left the mountains, it was ice cold, but by the time it made that trip all the way down the mountains to Laodicea, it was lukewarm. And lukewarm water is not very good. Down in the valley where the Lycus River joins the Maeander River, there are hot springs. However, when they would take this hot water up to Laodicea, by the time it got there, it was no longer hot — it had become lukewarm water.
When the Lord Jesus said to the Laodicean church, “You are neither cold nor hot,” they knew exactly what He was talking about. They had been drinking lukewarm water for years. Water left the mountains ice cold, and it left the springs steaming hot, but when they got it, both were lukewarm, and it was sickening. The Lord Jesus said that this church was neither cold nor hot and He would spew it out of His mouth.”
Yeshua was utilizing local circumstances to drive His point home to them. Hot has a function, cold has a function, but lukewarm is very undesirable.
A “lukewarm Christian?
I am going to share something with you today: After many years of ministry I still just can not understand how someone who confesses Yeshua as the Messiah can know about this verse and continue to live a mediocre life as far as God is concerned.
I understand VERY well that we all have barriers of one sort or another that separates parts of our life from God. That is not what I am referring to. I am not referring to those of us who are making a genuine effort to have a real relationship with God.
What I am referring to is that person who does not have the significant challenges that some do yet they “go to church”, go to lunch, go home, go to work, and then do it all again while never really giving God much consideration. To me, doing anything that even remotely resembles that is…well,…. stupid.
Who shall not fear thee, O Lord, and glorify Your name? for You only are holy: for all nations shall come and worship before You; for Your righteous deeds have been revealed .Revelation 15:4
In fact, I would go so far as to say that if someone is not actively working to enhance their relationship with Yeshua, in a genuine way, they very well may not even be a genuine part of Israel, “the church”. I don’t believe that there actually are any “lukewarm” “Christians”. It seems to me that those two words are polar opposites. Some who are lukewarm may “think” that they are “Christians”, but according to Revelation 3:16, they are not. In the end, it will all be decided on judgment day.
Do you remember the parable of the wheat and the tares? Tares are those who claim to be following God but are actually agents of the enemy that are purposely nefarious and working to steal, murder and destroy.
Today I encourage you to commit your life wholly and completely to Yeshua; no compromise.
